Extra Mile Typeface
Typeface / Fundraiser / World Record
-
With 4 weights of both upper and lowercase letters, Extra Mile is the first typeface of its kind. It is made solely through running whilst GPS tracking on various sports company apps - to create different font weights/styles.
Creative projects that I find the most interesting are often those that take a simple concept and keep pushing it until it becomes greater than the sum of its parts. This idea developed from a way to get some free trainers, to writing the longest letter in the history of the universe. It is a journey I’m still on, so watch this space.
I found a London park that would allow me to create a typographic grid, to maintain consistent letter proportions. Battersea Park is packed full of obstacles so during the months I was running/writing, I had to memorise almost every path and its impact on my letterforms. GPS blindspots were another common obstacle I needed to identify and navigate.
I would frequently hop fences, run through bushes, trample picnics, and occasionally pedalo across the swan-infested lake. At a time when scotch eggs were considered a significant meal, I was trampling them as I took bearings directly through any picnic in my way. Small prices to pay to maintain legibility.
There have been typos. Well over 100km of them. One ‘wrong’ path led me on another journey, both creative and karmic. Check out The Color Line.
